Cabin Fever Cure

Every year, Winter Hatches Fly Fishing Club organizes a spring outing -- usually before the season opens for trout in southern Ontario.  It’s a chance to clear the cobwebs and stretch our fly lines in readiness for pursuit of the wild denizens of our inland waters.  That's why we call it the "Cabin Fever Cure."

This year, we gathered on April 18 at what was for us a new venue: Fish 4 Trout in Cambellville, west of Milton.  It was a great day out.  The weather was glorious: sunny, not too warm, with a delightful breeze from the north that helped blow our flies out a bit further.  Many trout were caught and released, but among the most memorable was the beauty that Jesse Norris caught -- his second trout ever.  Congratulations, Jesse!  To view pictures of the outing go to http://picasaweb.google.com/slahman45/WinterHatchesOUTING?feat=email#

Successful Flies:  Roger Harwood initially discovered that the fly of choice was an orange Woolly Bugger, but concluded at the end of the day that “Actually, any Woolly Bugger will do.”  John Mangold’s favourite fly was a red-bodied Hamill’s Killer.  Stephen Lahman attributed his success to the authentic Coq de León feather fibre tails on his nymph flies.  Jesse Norris’ killing fly was a bead head Copper John.

All in all, it was an excellent day in a very pleasant setting.  Many thanks to Ron Massie and Greg Herring for organizing the outing and to Stephen Lahman for the photographs.

Fish 4 Trout is a private, family-friendly, put-and-take fishery with a 4-acre pond stocked with rainbow trout weighing between 2 and 4 pounds.  There is a small "Pro Shop" offering coffee, espresso and hot chocolate.  Picnic tables are available around the pond to enjoy an alfresco lunch.  For relief from rainy weather, the property has a couple of shelters with picnic tables.  Washrooms are also available for other forms of relief.

Fish 4 Trout is open to anyone who loves fishing, but fly fishers who catch-and-release are particularly welcome to try their luck.  You must use single barbless hooks and live-release your catch.  The cost is $25 per person for the day or part thereof.

Driving directions from Toronto
Take Highway 401 west.  Exit at Guelph Line (exit 312).  At the top of the exit ramp turn left, going south along Regional Road 1 (Main Street North).  Go through the village of Campbellville, cross the railroad tracks and go up the hill.  Turn left at the first cross road (approximately 1.25 km south of the tracks), which is Limestone Road (formerly 3rd Sideroad).  Fish 4 Trout will be on your left (north side of the road) about 0.5 km from the intersection.  Look for the “Fish 4 Trout” name on a sign at the road.  Turn left into the driveway.  The driveway is approximately 0.5 km long to the marked parking area in front of a large garage.  Park there and walk down the road behind the white gate to the pond in the valley.  Register at the Pro Shop beside the pond.
